Hi Richard, Sketches (whether on paper, whiteboard, etc.) are definitely NOT a waste of time and I'm surprised anyone would complain about that. The only thing I can imagine is that you're creating fairly high-fidelity wires on paper which might be a problem from a time management perspective?
Personally, I've found that a lot of my workflow is really dependent on the team I'm working with. You can be in one group where ideas are collaborative and go straight to implementation, whereas another group expects nothing else but for you to toss deliverables over the wall. Both instances will require you to work through your ideas but the latter is sort of hidden from the outside world where people might not understand your process (you handing over deliverables in x format is basically "the process" to them).
