If I pay someone $10 to do something for me for one year I do not expect them to carry me after that one year is up. The point they allow me a grace period to renew my annual contract with them is something I appreciate and do not have a problem if they use a commonly used practice to recoup that revenue they used to provide me that grace period. A one year contract on domain registration is one year, not one year and one day. With a system that provides plenty of renewal notifications and the mandatory ICANN notice to ensure a domain's owner contact info is correct I do not have any sympathy for anyone who complains their house burned down after smelling smoke for 10-30-60-90 days.
