That is one of Google's DNS Servers.

Yes and yes.  Actually pinging the Fully Qualified Domain name of the site, 
simply shows that the DNS Server is accessible as well as the IP Address that 
it resolves to.

Pinging 8.8.8.8 directly cuts out the middle man.
