Just my $.02 worth:

My Duo 230 has been a really reliable machine. I did have one major
problem that required surgery early in its life, but for the past many
years (I bought it new, lost track of time) it has been fine. It's out to
pasture now, I just fire it up once in a while when I need to do a bit of
work outside the office. The only thing is the keyboard and trackball are
dirty and need a good cleaning, I have to press really hard to make some
keys work, and I never have been able to get the trackball out, so it's
sticky. I even took it to a Mac shop, and they couldn't get it out!

I don't abuse it - for many years I carried it home each night from the
office, but not many long trips. I also still have two working batteries
that get me about 1.5 - 2 hours per charge (no I can't sell them, they
belong to my College :) )

I guess my point is that some laptops can beat the odds.
