There's a difference, though, between the logo and the mascot. For the logo, yes, something like the lettered cloud or a dreamcatcher (I like that one) would be better. But a mascot needs to be... lively. Personable. Animals are generally good for that, unless someone wants to anthropomorphize a cloud or similar.

And, while the logo needs to tie in clearly to the name and/or purpose of the site, the mascot doesn't.

Of course, having said that, I have to admit that the metamorphic aspect of using a butterfly as the mascot appeals to me. That may be too a) arcane or b) fluffy for broad appeal, though.
