Hello, As I have been asked to expand on my statement Iwill. And, I assure you, I will keep it brief.
First and foremost installing and managing your own EDI software is viable choice. However, like any other aspect of a company a decision must be made at some point when it makes sense to discontinue doing things that are unrelated to what the organization is in business for. As an example, years ago Ford motor company established rubber production plants in order to keep up with their demand for tires on the automobiles they were selling. This was necessary for them to do until it became apparent that a 3rd party could make these tires, cheaper, better and custom to their needs. EDI, should be viewed the same way by management. Years ago, the only solution was to buy, install and maintain EDI software and processes. And, yes, if I had to choose from one of the big three in the EDI industry (STERLING, GXS or INOVIS) to manage my EDI I would be reluctant as well. Especially given the fact that they still represent Managed EDI Services as an "alternative" solution due to the fact that the easy money to be made is in their EDI software selling. However, there is a Managed EDI Service company out their that that rises above. Lastly, to Laurie. I respect that you believe in the reasons you itemized. However, I do notice much of them are fear based. And, possibly even warranted depending on your history with any one particular EDI vendor in your past. I wonder though if all your EDI systems will be backed up, operate in a fail-safe environment, have the ability the run indefinitely in a natural disaster, be monitored 24 hours a day and always have dedicated resources available versus resources that do other tasks within IT. Anyway, my point is that everyone has a decision to make and there is no wrong decision. I just think it has come time that management really evaluate the concept of investing in EDI infrastructure when the proponents all sell EDI infrastructure. Steve Because: 1) We don't want to depend on a 3rd party to host the information. 2) We don't want to rely on the internet to have access to our own data. 3) It's confidential and we don't trust a 3rd party. 4) We want to manipulate the data ourselves. 5) We don't want to keep paying a 3rd party to host and handle our stuff. I'm sure others can think of more reasons.
