Anyone who thinks it is too expensive doesn't have to buy it. No doubt there will be plenty of used LP-PANs for sale when the P3 actually comes out.
As far as I am concerned all ham radio purchases are luxuries anyway so just like buying my K3 it's only a question of do I want it and can I afford it. If I do and I can then I'll buy it, if I don't or I can't then I won't.
