I think that there is another - more primitive - way to get two EMCs
in a little communication: M62-M65 commands to send output on one EMC
machine and M66 to read the input pin on second machine and vice
versa.

I think that it would make sense in a production line, where it is
essential to report some kind of status from one machine to another -
if something has been done etc and creating the Classic Ladder logic
or "permanent" g-code around that might work. At least that is how I
thought I would do it, but I think that Modbus would introduce much
broader vocabulary than "yes" or "no" in such a dialogue and/or
significantly reduce number of physical I/O pins needed.
