David, I'm afraid you're quite wrong about this.  First off, poetry 
slams were a fad that has come and gone; second, the sort of material 
that was typically presented at a slam often bore little relationship to 
literary poetry; third, name one poet coming out of the slam movement to 
achieve national recognition.

Not exactly what I'd call "thriving."
