I know of several experienced engravers who use blank notation specifically to hide a "spacing" layer -- that is, a series of notes designed to control the spacing. It would make sense to allow you to set "affects spacing" in Alternate Notation, and we were partly down that path last year when we ran into some design snags -- I don't recall offhand what they were.
