Depends on the music being played. Quite frequently the assistant is 
just given make-work, but sometimes the assistant is necessary. The most 
interesting example I've witnessed was a performance in the late '70s by 
the Cleveland Orchestra of Mahler 7. They used both an asst-1st *and* an 
asst-3rd horn!
