I personally do not like the "X" button, unless the reaction on
clicking it is the same very time.
Instead of the standard "X" I would use alternatives, depending on the
action following the click.
These alternatives could be at the same place and differ in colour/
background colour, or at least in the text displayed when the mouse
hovers over it.
A click could even result in the display of a select-box with possible
alternative actions.
