I agree. In my first message asked about licensing in general, along
with the definition of a Free font. But you mentioned GPL yourself, as
did Sergey, so I just tried to follow up on how GPL would effect
fonts, if that was the license to be applied. That's why I started
another thread to avoid the discussion of licenses.

Well... This thread started with the idea of Free font
project. Someone has to decide on how the fonts would be
licensed. Without a license the fonts would be under general copyright
laws which are more restrictive than we want them to be, no? I think a
license could also solve the problem with different countries having
different copyright laws for fonts.

That's fine with me if you don't want to participate in the debate :-)

Perhaps, perhaps not. The type1 fonts that are included in XFree86
have different licenses. Some of them are more free than others. If
Microsoft allowed to distribute it's fonts with XFree86, that wouldn't
make their fonts more Free. XFree86 simply isn't about Free fonts,
they distribute what they are allowed, so of course there are no such
licensing problems to discuss. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That this thread happens to be an XFree86 mailing list has to do with
the fact there no other places to discuss similar topics as this, so I
see nothing wrong with it. The fonts themselves (be that any font), or
their licensing has very little to do with the XFree86 project.

I hope you are mistaken :-)
