Ahh, make sure the USB is disables within your bios!
The USB hardware can interrupt NT even though no drivers are loaded. I had this
problem with a dual boot OS where I wanted the USB to work in Win98, but when I booted
NT, the system occasionally froze for 3 seconds at a time. This has to do with a
keyboard emulation feature built into some motherboards' bios.
If during the Protel freeze, your mouse also pauses, there is a chance that the USB is
sending a dummy interrupt to the system, however, it may not be the problem.
DO THIS ANYWAYS -> go to creative's web site & get the latest drivers for your
Ensoniq motherboard sound chip. Do not bother downloading the entire Liveware
package, just download the driver update.

Subject: Re: [PEDA] CLARIFICATION: Speed problem with Protel 99SE in PCB e ditor !
| I will reply to the last several posts in one here, cut down on everybody's
| email load.
|
| Clive,
| I have been running P99SE on this machine for close to 10 months now
| and have never had a blue screen event from P99SE. Had a few back with P98.
| It is my understanding from most of the discussions on this list that the
| behavior your describing was typically limited to W95 or W98. Several times
| I have read that I basically don't have to worry about the memory leaks with
| NT. I normally never reboot the machine other then approx. every 3 - 4
| weeks, I logout and login daily though. When I do reboot the machine it is
| usually after some form of a fault condition (not necessarily P99SE) and I
| just feel better having rebooted from scratch.
|
| Brendon,
| knowing enough just to be dangerous describes me as well. So I don't
| mess with the NT stuff I don't understand thoroughly. WIN?? now that's a
| different question.
| Pauses on mouse actions, now that you mention it I notice the same
| but had not equated the two together. The one that drives me nuts is click
| and hold, and hold and hold, nothing happens, move mouse and all of a sudden
| it picks up something else that you just briefly moved over as you moved the
| mouse. This one is also not consistent, less consistent by recollection then
| the shortcut "pregnant pause".
|
| Tim,
| I believe that your problem is more the analyzing net routine, or
| other processes, where it can sometimes go to sleep for up to 10 - 20, even
| 40 minutes. If you meant something else please elaborate a bit. Been there
| done that and that is not the issue with this problem. That problem I
| understand from past experiences.
|
| Brian,
| no Matrox video, keyboard is standard PS2 type, USB ports are unused
| and I can find no instance of drivers for these ports (but what do I know
| about NT). Sound card is a simple Ensoniq device and there are no sounds
| programmed for menu type items. I do get sounds for some alerts, program
| closings, shut-downs and reboots. I have not programmed any sounds for
| anything else. I think that covers what you were suggesting, let me know if
| I misunderstood anything which you posted.
|
| Dennis,
| I am going to ask MIS to disable my virus scan temporarily but they
| will probably be very reluctant to do it. I have thought of this as well but
| I am reticent to run unprotected because it has saved my butt more then a
| few times in just the past year.
|
| Thanks y'all for all the suggestions.
| Brendon keep in touch, let's see if we can find the solution and let
| each other know if we succeed. Glad to hear that it is plaguing you on a
| much faster newer machine, saved me the embarrassment of not fixing it after
| begging for a faster machine.
