Are you using a matrox video card? Do you have your USB ports enabled? Make sure
you keyboard is a standard PS2 type. These 3 are dangerous under WinNT4 & and they
can create pauses under many different circumstances.
Another pause generator is SBLive sound cards which go crazy with interrupts &
dual CPUs. If you have a sound effect associated with menu items, like a desktop
theme, this will access your sound card with every other menu - key pressing.
There are different solutions for each problem...

| Thanks Brendon,
| it is at least reassuring to know that I am not the only person
| going wacko with this precise problem. I assume you have been watching the
| other responses, I haven't had a chance to grab my MIS rep and investigate
| some of the other keyboard handle type issues raised earlier (I'm definitely
| NT challenged). I have virtually eliminated all of Colby's issues, just one
| or two more little checks to do regarding his list.
|
| Further note: I have tried a couple of times this morning to
| replicate the problem as I tried some changes to my system. Be damned if I
| can't replicate it at the moment. I know it is a little inconsistent but it
| definitely shows it's ugly head during the heat of doing a bunch of routing
| and or changes in a DDB. I am fortunate in that several others on our
| department (CAD Services) have been standing looking over my shoulder when
| it occurs, so I have good back-up that the problem definitely exists.
| Unfortunately I am the only person left (see below) who runs Protel
| consistently so it is really only my problem.
|
| Out of curiosity, what CPU and Speed are you running because I have been
| tempted to yell and scream for a new machine based upon this issue. I am
| running a NT4 SP6, 466Mhz Celeron w/ 256MB of ram, a little under powered
| but then we don't typically do large PCB designs (typically < 4" x 6", < 300
| components). My worst fear is that it will not disappear after getting a
| faster machine and then my credibility goes for a shit (especially when we
| have probably reduced our company head count by close to 50% in the last 6
| months, and any purchases are scrutinized by the executive).
