FWIW, Office 2004 runs like a champ on my G3 iBook 700. I'll stress again that, for the most part, Microsoft apps written for the Mac generally tend to be quite nice - especially when compared with their Windows counterparts.
We'll use the free Corel Word Perfect version 3.5, Abiword, Open Office, whatever is compatible with the OS we are placing. Free is good. Free is especially good for first time users who don't have a computer in the first place because they can't afford one.

As long as the software does what you need...
