I greatly appreciate your (and others) advice. And I am seeing it
best to fiddle as little with big folders as possible. But I am
constantly bemused by my having a user folder and in it is me! The
machine also seems to be an owner. I paid for this damned thing,
not the machine, I bought it! But it seems to have a higher status
than me, it rides supreme at super top level. I am a level down
within one of its folders. But, crazily, I can fiddle with it with
an admin password. So I am given at least the illusion of super
boss, right?
I am seeing my physician about this mac OS X why should you all
carry this burden?

Your referring to the 'root' account. This is the user who can do
ANYTHING to your system like deleting all of the files from the
Library and System folder. This is an account that you don't want to
use (although you can enable it if you're brave). If you'd like info
on enabling the root account look in help and it'll tell you how.
Then, you'll have FULL CONTROL of your machine. Anyway, using your
Mac as an Admin account is the safest way to use it. You might want
to look into using the Terminal. There is the sudo command
(pronounced soo-doo), you're telling the super-user (root) to do
something. Of course it will ask you for your password (which you
seem to be having problems with in the first place) so it might not
work for you. Read a Book on OS X. Knowledge is a GOOD thing.
