Bought a FW external box and drive (Seagate 120GB 7200rpm). I will
probably end up putting this inside my QS 933 tower and moving the
60GB ST360021A Barracuda Seagate out into the external case.
Couple of questions:
(1) The case I bought has no fan and is a bit meagre in proportion (I
just assumed it would have a fan!)! My instinct is to have one, the
shop I bought it from is happy to exchange it for bigger one (the one
I have is a bit meagre in proportion, not that much room for any air
flow) with a fan (extra $30 Australian for box with fan!). They say
there is no real need for a fan - fanless is the modern trend for
both boxes and computers - but should I be so trendy here? It gets
pretty hot in Sydney in summer for a start. On the other hand, I
might just use the FW drive for occasional backup and not for regular
long session use.
(2) Can someone please remind me: can one just switch on and off a
firewire external in the middle of a session (it not being "the"
startup drive of course? Or does one need to switch it on first
before booting the main machine, and properly shutting down main
machine before turning off the power to the FW external? I don't
think the external drives wind down on shutting the main computer
down? Must check on this...
