You don't need to do this.

I believe that you can drag the FW icon to the trash while the CPU is running, as long it has no active files engaged, and then get a " do you want to do that" inquiry and say yes and then turn off the FW drive, but I haven't tried it for fear I would somehow screw up my backup system on the FW drive.

The only way you'll corrupt files (and I've done it to USB thumb drives) is unplug it without dragging to the trash first. You won't get any dialog, but dragging it to the trash, and waiting for the lights to stop flickering on the drive ensures that the drive is properly dismounted.

Do it all the time.

As for fanless, that's a good question. MY drive case has a fan, and I'm happier for it, since that 200 GB drive does run hot. If the slight noise from the fan isn't a worry, I'd switch out the fanless case for one with a fan, just to be a belt-and-suspenders type. If you stick with the fanless case be aware of how it vents the heat, and don't block it.
