You are lucky. It is entirely possible to trash the entire volume doing that. I did it on my USB thumb drive (256MB) which was nearly full. Yanking it out without properly dismounting it turned every file into a 4K stub, yet the space was still recorded as in use.
I had to reformat it to be able to use it again; I was NOT able to recover any files from it. (two files were irreplaceable, that sucked having to do that work over.)
I suspect FW is less susceptible to this than USB, but as a main purpose of FW drives out there seems to be a backup, I'd be careful.
