It has never been necessary for me to shut my CPU down in order to
close the Aux. HD. If you go up under Finder & click on "Shut down Aux.
HD", it will shut it down without affecting your CPU or other
operations. Then I can turn the AHD off, or leave it on if I think I
might use it again before shutting down my computer. Otherwise, if I
just turn the AHD off at the enclosure box, I will get a memo telling
me that my AHD has not been properly "put away" & I may have lost data
(which I don't think ever happened). But as far as I can tell, it does
not affect the CPU, one way or another. Computer models & OS systems
may vary; I don't know.
