My G3 w/ G4 CPU, running OS10.3 (two internal HDs, one containing Classic 9.2.2 & the other the 10+) also has an External HD. I have to turn my Ext. HD "on" so that the icon will appear on the desktop in order to access it. If, when I'm finished using it, I just turn it off, I will get a "memo" window telling me that my aux. HD was improperly shut down & I may have lost data. (To my knowledge, I've never lost anything, but--). It tells me that I have to go up to the tool bar & "shut down the Aux. HD" in the Finder for it to "eject" properly. Well, of course there's nothing to "eject", but it keeps my computer happy, so I do that and then I will turn turn the Aux. HD off at the external case. As far as booting up, it doesn't seem to matter whether my Aux. HD is off or on.

Couple of questions:

(1) The case I bought has no fan and is a bit meagre in proportion (I just assumed it would have a fan!)! My instinct is to have one, the shop I bought it from is happy to exchange it for bigger one (the one I have is a bit meagre in proportion, not that much room for any air flow) with a fan (extra $30 Australian for box with fan!). They say there is no real need for a fan - fanless is the modern trend for both boxes and computers - but should I be so trendy here? It gets pretty hot in Sydney in summer for a start. On the other hand, I might just use the FW drive for occasional backup and not for regular long session use.

(2) Can someone please remind me: can one just switch on and off a firewire external in the middle of a session (it not being "the" startup drive of course? Or does one need to switch it on first before booting the main machine, and properly shutting down main machine before turning off the power to the FW external? I don't think the external drives wind down on shutting the main computer down? Must check on this...
