These are pretty strong statements. Noone is saying that users should not use Java 6 or 7 if they choose. Indeed they get the performance benefits by doing so.
The decision here is whether moving to Java 6 for development convenience is worth no longer supporting Java 5. There is nothing stopping developers from using java 6 as long as they don't use java 6 language specific features. Which the build server will easily catch. So the question becomes are the features and apis of Java 6 compelling enough to break backwards compatibility?
