Dataweaver wrote this a couple of days ago, but I had to read
Spaceships 5 first:

The first issue is whether or not dangerous speeds are attainable in a
year or so; if they are, armored hulls would be necessary for all
interstellar journeys.

The bubble must provide some mitigation, so why not make it
full protection?

In the 'The Quantum Connection' & 'Warp Speed' novels by Dr Travis Taylor, (IIRC) the Alcubierre Warp Bubble is completely impervious _whilst in effect_ due to preventing interaction between the universes inside & outside.

However for things like Navigation & Vision, it needs to be dropped periodically, during which periods it provides no inherent protection (Doc Travis proposes a cycle long enough to allow visible light in, but short enough to prevent most other things).
