Then use consistency groups. You don't need them for DB2 though - with FRBACKUP, and since DB2 is 99% of my data, I'm good. I backup 20TB of production data every night to tape, no big deal. The point is there are plenty of tools available - multi-volume datasets are no big deal, you have similar problems even if the datasets aren't multi-volume.
