Following one of IBM's most solid product rules and recalling (well, some of
us can recall back over 30 years) that the 3270 range, the initial display
being the 3277, replaced the 2260 range, the 3277, and latter the 3278,
Model 1 was required in order to provide a replacement for the 2260.

In the event, I think just about every customer plumped for the Model 2 and
happily expanded into the 3278 Model 3 and 4 when they arrived.
