Waaaaay back in '99 I suggested a port to the NetBSD guys (back when NetBSD's big claim to fame was its portability), and instead of saying "hey, neat idea," or "what would it take?" they subjected me to a tirade about how much Linux sucked. That sort of soured me on finding BSD porters for the architecture.

I haven't ever approached Theo about a 390 port. But with Hercules, you could get started for very very cheap....
