From: James Johnson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

It is interesting that the Virginia Technical Institute supercomputer
was so fast and powerful on a per CPU basis, faster than the pentium
processor "supercomputers", yet the "Genius" at Apple decided to bring
OpenStep X back to the Intel processor. What passes for brains at
Apple Computer stinks and you should not step in it.

The above is exactly the kind of bigoted, misinformed drivel that makes me despair of Mac users sometimes. If jumping to conclusions were an Olympic sport, James would have a good shot at the gold.

First of all, let's take it as granted that the people who run Virginia Tech are smarter than James. Let's also take it as granted that they carefully evaluated both PC and Mac processor choices when deciding to build their supercomputer (they in fact explicitly said this both in the video Apple made of them AND in innumerable interviews on the subject they gave during and after the project).

But James seriously believes that a bunch of computer science professors who were PC-oriented before they started and were naturally thinking along PC lines when they proposed and received funding for the project just simply got "bamboozled" by the clever marketing of Apple, and that the "hype" also bamboozled the entire supercomputing world when the people who compile this stuff listed Virginia Tech as the #3 most powerful supercomputer on earth for a while.

Please.

Isn't just a teensy-weensy bit more likely that both AT THE TIME and even up to RECENTLY, Apple's overall offering *was indeed* better not just in raw processing power but in peripheral factors like energy efficiency/heat control etc? Why yes, yes it is likely.

I'm not even going to go into the many sound reasons for Apple to use Intel processors starting in mid-2006, except to say that a) James clearly hasn't watched the actual keynote (and why should he -- it would just get in the way of him forming his opinions!) and b) that James has no idea what the future roadmaps of IBM, Freescale and Intel are -- but Steve and his team *do.* And so do I, because I study this stuff. Which involves reading things BEFORE forming opinions. Ah well.

Finally, James proposes that he is CLEARLY smarter than anyone at Apple, because HE can see what a huge mistake they're making while THEY cannot. I think I'll let James' record of achievement (oh wait ...) speak for itself on this occasion.
