Subject: Re: Apple moves to Intel chips

For me the switch to Intel is simply bad news. When Apple came out with
OS X operating system I was impressed by it's potentials and the fact
that Apple was using a RISC processor.

Then you'll be very reassured to know that Intel has been making RISC chips for years, as has AMD. Intel has increasingly used RISC technology since the Pentium II (which they described as a CISC chip doing RISC processing at the time).

The combination is what brought
me to purchase my first Apple. Being in a business where security and
performance ,(in that order) were critical the bonus of decent
multimedia performance was too much to pass up.

Then you'll be doubly pleased to know that an Intel chip is inherently every bit as secure as an IBM chip. It is the OPERATING SYSTEM upon which the security of the computer is dependent, not the chip. Were this not the case, OS X could not run on Intel chips, yet we've seen that it does.

. I won't go into why I know Intel
processors stink.

Mainly because you have no idea what you're talking about. Apple does not plan to use Intel chips in their products for AT LEAST A YEAR. Are you telling us that you already know ALL the specs on the chip (set) Intel will use on this future product?

Apple could have
switched to other RISC processor manufactures besides IBM without any
major code disruption.

Well, since they've already tried IBM and Freescale/Motorola, who exactly are you thinking of that's left?

With Berkley FreeBSD as their foundation for OS
X it wouldn't have been that big a deal.

Wow, maybe that's why OS X is already running on Intel Pentium chips today! Ya think?

Reduced Instruction Set Computer

I wanted to point something out here about your knowledge: it's 10 years out of date.

Examples of (more or less) RISC processors are the Berkeley RISC,
HP-PA, Clipper, i960, AMD 29000, MIPS R2000 and DEC Alpha. IBM's first
RISC computer was the RT/PC (IBM 801), they now produce the RISC-based
RISC System/6000 and SP/2 lines.

For those of you who don't follow this stuff, the Clipper chip mentioned above (as an example of a current RISC processor) was produced in 1995. In the post-2000 world, the CISC v. RISC debate is well and truly moot, and has been for five years. Indeed, this is the first time I've read much about the so-called "debate" in ages.

Basing your "jumping to conclusions" premises on the fact that Intel Macs won't be using RISC is like saying you won't buy a new computer because it can't run Windows 95. It's irrelevant today.

But go, have a good time elsewhere. Losing people who make rash, ill- informed decisions can only HELP the Mac platform, not hurt it. Have fun. You've got another two years of PowerPC products to look forward to, but in your unrighteous indignance I'm sure you'll forego them and buy other products that only use good ol' PowerPC chips -- like an Xbox.

Maybe, with a little luck and patience, you can get it to boot OS 9.
