"Let's kick Intel's ass!"
Funny, I remember back in the 68k days it was "Bash Big Blue" (for
those
of you too young to remember that, Big Blue is IBM... the makers of
the
current line of PPC chips that Apple is using).
Is it really necessary for me to point out that Apple NEVER SAID
THIS? The slogan you quote above was from Power Computing (as you
noted), but you didn't make clear that this was NEVER adopted by
Apple in ANY WAY. Was never sure why they used "Intel" when they
really meant "Microsoft" anyway -- who really cares what chip the
thing is running as long as it's running OS X and all my apps?
Now IBM has made it clear that keeping up with what Apple wants/
needs to
stay on top is not a priority for them.
As of right now, and looking ahead the next few years, Intel has the
better line in terms of speed, power consumption, and heat.
Computers are
getting smaller and more portable, and Apple needs to plan on fast,
power
efficient, cool(er) processors. Intel also has nice chip sets for a
number of other things like wireless, all sorts of portable stuff, and
DRM(eeek!).
Very, very well put. Intel is now one of only two companies focused
on creating COMPUTER processors. AMD is the other. Get used to it.
Intel appears to be a better fit for what Apple wants to do going
forward.
They appear to be VERY willing to create custom chipsets for Apple to
differentiate them from MS's requirements -- something IBM and
Freescale/Moto don't seem to be willing to do. That's a very
important part of this deal that I think a lot of people are missing.
There are also a number of other strategic side effects (think
Classic but for other x86 OSes/applications).
Chris, you're a real smart guy. Glad to meet ya.
Of course, no where did Apple say "build for Intel only". No, it was
"stop building for PPC only and start building for Universal". So
there
is nothing stopping Apple from deciding to use PPC chips in future
Macs
should IBM or any other PPC vendor like Motorola's spin off company
(the
name escapes me right now) make ones that Apple wants to include.
EXACTLY. Man, it's nice to hear someone besides me saying this! To
summarise Steve: "Platform independence has been one of the MAIN
GOALS of OS X right from day one."
. my budget can't afford to buy a $2000
machine twice in two years, so if I buy a G5 this year, I can't spend
that kind of money next year on an Intel based Mac).
Your Mac mini plan is a sound one, but I might suggest to you a
refurb iMac G5 instead. It's only a little more than tricked-out
mini, and will last you longer. Besides, why assume you will need to
buy an Intel Mac when they first appear? Wouldn't the normal rules
apply -- wait a while for rev. B intel hardware? That's what I plan
to do ... I'm buying the 20" iMac G5 I had planned to anyway (just
saving up now), and then I'll re-evaluate in two years.
