>> Funny, I remember back in the 68k days it was "Bash Big Blue" (for >> those >> of you too young to remember that, Big Blue is IBM... the makers of >> the >> current line of PPC chips that Apple is using). > >Is it really necessary for me to point out that Apple NEVER SAID >THIS? The slogan you quote above was from Power Computing (as you >noted), but you didn't make clear that this was NEVER adopted by >Apple in ANY WAY.
Sorry, I didn't clarify. I should have, but didn't. Anyone that remembers the Bash Big Blue days knows it wasn't Apple's (official) attitude. (There was the unofficial sentiment by some of the employees, but never official as an Apple corporate thing... I received my IBM PC trash can icon from a friend at Apple, although I don't have a clue if they created it, I just know he told me it was on a number of desktops there. It was also widely available on BBSes at the time, so who knows who made the thing). Also, as long as I'm clarifying, the Bash Big Blue was not a Power Computing slogan either. It was just a line used by Mac Zealots from the days back when the IBM PC was the primary competitor. Long before Power Computing appeared. >Was never sure why they used "Intel" when they >really meant "Microsoft" anyway I think from Power Computing's standpoint, it was Intel that was the enemy. Power Computing's whole marketing line (in the beginning at least) was that they made the fastest Macs (faster then Apple's own offerings). And they were really trying to say "Buy one of ours, because we smoke everyone else". They couldn't say "Lets Kick Apple's Ass" as that would just be really bad form. So they targeted Intel instead. I suppose they could have said "Lets Kick Dell's Ass", but then they would have to justify why they singled them out, back then, Dell wasn't the biggest guy on the block. So then they would have to make versions attacking each of the major PC vendors (Dell, Compaq, HP, Packard Bell, NEC, IBM, eMachines, and anyone else I'm forgetting that had a chunk of the market back then). Nah, it was easier to just pick on the primary CPU vendor, at least that way, they only had to ignore AMD and Cyrix. >who really cares what chip the >thing is running as long as it's running OS X and all my apps Exactly. In fact, if Apple could have made the switch without telling anyone, and did so, you would never hear any of these doom sayers utter a peep. Because the Mac would just continue to be the Mac. This isn't the first time Intel chips have appeared inside Apple computers (just the first time the CPU is from Intel). They have used Intel stuff before, as well as most other chip makers. No one freaks out when Apple switches from Texas Instruments to NEC chips for some part of the logic board (just tossing a random concept out there, I have no idea if such an event has ever happened). Why? Because it doesn't matter. The Mac is the whole experience. It is NOT the CPU inside. (But you knew this, so I'm preaching to the choir for the sake of the rest of the congregation that may be listening) >> . my budget can't afford to buy a $2000 >> machine twice in two years, so if I buy a G5 this year, I can't spend >> that kind of money next year on an Intel based Mac). > >Your Mac mini plan is a sound one, but I might suggest to you a >refurb iMac G5 instead. It's only a little more than tricked-out >mini, and will last you longer. Besides, why assume you will need to >buy an Intel Mac when they first appear? Wouldn't the normal rules >apply -- wait a while for rev. B intel hardware? That's what I plan >to do ... I'm buying the 20" iMac G5 I had planned to anyway (just >saving up now), and then I'll re-evaluate in two years. I'm not sure I can use an iMac G5. I'd like one, but I'm limited by physical space requirements. I have a computer desk that barely fits my current 17" LCD screen (which is connected to the VGA output on my spit and bubble gum repaired iMac DV SE). I have to stop by a dealer and measure, but I'm fairly sure even the 17" iMac G5 is too large to fit in the desk. Don't suggest I replace the desk, I thought of that already. Doing so entails breaking up the matched set of furniture, which my wife won't allow. The wife wins, period. :-) So my options were things that could use my existing 17" LCD, and that meant a Mini or a PowerMac G5. I had been planning on the Dual 2 GHz PM G5, but if I buy it, that is it for the next 5 years (that is all my budget allows). I'm sure I will do just fine with the PM G5, but as an Apple Developer, I have to think about what is also the right choice for my software development going forward. Until I see more of what Apple is planning with their CPU change, I hesitate to spend my 5 year computer budget on the PM G5. I can swing a mini this year, and then spend my 5 year budget next year or even later if I wish. (ie: I may very well not get a 1st generation Intel based machine, I may hold off until 2007 and get a 2nd or 3rd generation instead). I have to decide by mid July, and I know I'll probably make the decision last minute (although the whole thing may be moot, as of last night I ran into a need for another machine that is at least a 1.5 GHz G4, and I need that one soon, so that may use my computer purchase that I need to use before mid July or loose it. That means pushing off my machine until after July and use next year's purchase, which also means I can see what PPC machines Apple has coming out and that may swing me one way or the other) -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
