I have, perhaps mistakenly, the impression that the move to the
pentium D will allow Apple to lockdown delivery of content (movies,
music) more effectively and that there's bound to be more proft in
selling content than software in the future.
Maybe I'm way off base. An article on Wired suggested that the Pentium
D technology had
controls that would allow Apple to do with movies what they've done
with music.
Couple of different thoughts here:
1. Were Apple to offer movies or videos for download, there would by
necessity have to be SOME form of DRM. That's a given. Pot-smoking
delusional morons might think you could put together a business model
with unrestricted video files, but of course none of them have tried
it nor could they make it work. You can't have legal downloadable
files on that scale without some kind of rights protection.
2. There's been no serious evidence that Apple's future Intel Macs
will run Pentium Ds. It's possible, of course, but methinks it more
likely that at least the high-end Intel Macs will be using an
entirely different set of chips. Google "Dothan" and "Yonah" if
you're interested in some fact-based speculation rather than talking-
out-of-ass speculation.
3. Intel Macs will NOT be PCs with Mac OS X on. They will be using
different BIOS, chipsets, piping and other techniques. So it is NOT a
slam-dunk that Apple -- who have consistently fought for consumer
rights even in their own DRM schema -- will use Intel's proposed in-
chip DRM. To me, that product is pretty clearly the work of a company
looking to please a client -- MS. Apple may opt not to use that, or
use something else, or surprise the hell out of everybody. :)

Claiming that the Macintosh is inferior to Windows because most
people use Windows is like saying that all other restaurants are
inferior to McDonald's.
Chas,
How do you get your sig to change every time?
