The benefit that a listserv has over a Forum is that messages on a listserv "passively" come in periodically to your email client and either you reply, save or delete as you see fit and as time allows (now or later). With a Forum you have to "actively" stop what you are doing, login, scroll through questions and answers to see if anything has come up that you might be interested in.
The passive method provides small breaks in our normal tasks whereas the Forum becomes just one more task to "have" to do.
Plus with the passive mode you may see something and decide to respond, save etc.. that you might not otherwise even have looked at scanning down through a list of subjects (nothing says that a Forum keeps people from adding unrelated matter to an established thread)

There are pros and cons on each tool. I like both but I tend to lean over the forum just when I need to look at archived messages. I usually don't keep any postings in my outlook for history.
I would be nice if you could still receive the postings in your mailbox and be able to reply from your email client, that way you would only have to subscribe to the forum once and forget about it. I agree, it's a waste of time to log in, browse messages and start typing a reply. And btw, they ought to get some nicer templates/colors!
Change is hard and not all of us like it, specially after years of using this medium. Read "Who moved my cheese?"

The forums will be harder/time consuming for those that desire to help. For a list, all you have to do is hit reply and type out your reply. In a forum, you first have to go and view those threads, and then if you are going to reply do so.
It will slow down the helping process.
