Ian/Eric,

Let's assume for a minute that we want to allow Indiana to use
OpenSolaris in, or as, it's name, yet not disenfranchise other
distros.

Might I suggest that any distro that wants to use OpenSolaris in it's
name submit to an automated test suite that verifies compatibility
with a reference build. (Each individual request would of course
would have to be approved by "the powers that be".)

So, if it is within the scope of the Indiana Project, I propose
Indiana as a candidate to be a reference base for compatibility.
(Either that or SXCE). This would be similar to other open source
projects that put out a reference build to test compatibility against,
but leave it is up to the individual distro owners to compile and
package their own versions.

This would arrangement would clearly make calling Indiana
"OpenSolaris" with no qualifiers a reasonable proposition.

As an example, Nexenta would not be able to use OpenSolaris as part of
it's name, as it does not respect all of OpenSolaris's committed
interfaces. Belenix on the other hand might qualify, with some
testing, and tweaking. ("Belenix OpenSolaris")

Of course it would be up to the individual distros to decide whether
or not they want to undergo the testing required.

P.S. - I do not know the technical cost of implementing such a test
suite. Nor do I know whether Sun has made up it's mind yet whether or
not to allow any distro to include OpenSolaris in it's name. (Clearly
the community is free to make a proposal to Sun, and see if they will
approve the use of their Trademark, and if so any caveats)
