I have received had many suggestions from listers, none of which seem to be
relevent. Let me re-state the problem:

I am a sighted volunteer helping some blind students learn to use
computers. One of my students has jfw installed on a new IBM Aptiva with
Windows 98. The computer works fine until we load jfw. After working on
some files for a while, the screen turns blue with a message that "an error
has occurred in your program" or a white box telling us we have performed
an "illegal opertion". Keyboard doesn't work. Mouse buttons don't work.
And Alt-Ctrl-Del doesn't work. The only way out is to throw the switch.

I followed, Henter-Joyce instructions to change Windows 98 settings such
as unchecking "view as web page", "animate windows....", and selecting the
classic radio buttons.

When i tried to change the JAWS settings I got to the Config Mgr with
Insert-6 and tried to select "Graphics and Symbols". Got an "illegal
operation" message, and had to throw the switch.

Whenever we try t shut down the computer the normal way from the start menu
we get an "illegal operation" message. Even if we shut off jfw first, we
have the same problem. .

As long as I don't start jfw the computer works normally. And, since it
is new, I see no point in running defrag or a complete scan, as one lister
suggested.

Others mentioned the video card. Don't understand what the video card has
to do with this particular problem.

I spoke to the dealer's technician and he will check with IBM and the video
card manufacturer to see if either of them has any suggestions.

In the meantime we would like to know if any other listers are using an IBM
Aptiva with jfw.
