My take on this is that the Christian Fundamentalists (CF), who historically
were Southern Democrats, at some point kind of glommed on to the Republicans
and Conservatives, who in earlier times were very much for mind your own
business liberty and civil rights for all. I think they were drawn to the
Republicans and Conservatives because they openly include religious freedom
among the rights they defend and uphold. The CFs thought that if they gave
them their votes, that they could dictate agenda. The Republicans, for the
most part gladly took their votes and gave them some token lip service here
and there, but have not followed through in doing their bidding. From what
I understand the CFs have been bitterly denouncing the Republicans for
awhile now and are trying to build their own new party. I have a friend, who
sadly, joined a CF cult a few years ago. Every time I talk to her she is
parroting vehement anti-Republican and anti-Bush rhetoric that the "elders"
and "brothers" have instructed her to believe. At first I was scratching my
head thinking there was no way these cult leaders could be Liberals. But
now I "get" it - Republicans are also the devil now. Republicans are mostly
embarrased they they ever let the CFs hitch their wagon to them in exchange
for votes and have assidiously tried to distance themselves from the CFs for
a number of years now.
