This was exactly why I went with a Verizon cell phone in the first place. Of course back then (in the late 90's) it was not a tiny flip phone with a built-in camera and/or mp3 player. There is a connector which allowed me to plug the cell phone into a USB cable that attached to my laptop and it became a wireless 'modem'.

I used to camp a lot and it was great to be in the Santa Barbara Mountains where I could bring out the laptop, plug in my cell phone, and call up my email or do some web browsing all for the cost of a local call. My plan gave me 300 anytime minutes and free long distance calls from the Mexican Border almost all the way up to San Francisco.

These days I don't do much camping so I am more interested in a simple phone which does Bluetooth so I don't get into trouble using it while driving. And yes, I yell at drivers who pay more attention to their phone than their driving as they blithely endanger everyone else on the road.
