Repeat my statement of problem. When I try to install the extension,
either from its web presence or from the locally downloaded file, I
get the message:
"Software installation is currently disabled. Click Edit Options ...
to enable it and try again."
With a click box labeled "Edit Options ...". When I click that today,
_nothing happens_. Last night, I could click that box and get to the
normal "Edit Preferences" panel of FireFox. Today I can't get there
from here. I also can't get any result from clicking Edit ->
Preferences. _nothing happens_ PLUGH

Even when I could get there, I could click on the box "let FireFox
download updates" or whatever its real name is, and that didn't change
the behavior of the program.

As potential therapy, I have stopped and restarted FireFox, and
cleared all Private Data. Nothing changed, except that I had to
remember a few things. This is FireFox 1.5.0.1. Also Fedora Core 3,
in case it matters.

I suppose as further therapy, I could delete and re-install FireFox,
but that doesn't really appeal. Then I could reboot the computer.
Then I could re-install the OS.
