I would like to install the "adblock" extension for mozilla/firefox.

When I try, it tells me that "Software installation is currently
disabled". Even if I go through the motions of enabling software
installation in FireFox. I think this is really a permissions
problem.

This is how I installed Adblock in my Firefox ver 1.5.

Open Firefox:

1. Tools
2. Extensions
3. Get more extensions
4. Adblock
5. Install Now
6. Install Now

Note: Adblock will be upgraded when Firefox is restarted.

Adblock will appear in the Tools menu and also at the lower right corner
of the Firefox window if all goes well.

That is indeed the standard method. In my case it didn't work. I
deduce that you had never disabled Software Installation in a previous
version of FireFox. It turns out that the switch to do this has
disappeared in FireFox 1.5. Since there is no more switch, there is
no more easy GUI Edit -> Preferences way to change the switch.
Well maybe so ...

I have not disabled Software Installation in a previous version of FireFox. I have allowed sites to install software.

Open Firefox:

1. Edit
2. Preferences
3. Exceptions (to the right of "Warn me when web sites try to install extensions or
themes")

This bring up the "Allowed Sites - Software Installation"

You can specify which web sites are allowed to install software. Type the exact
address of the site you want to allow and then click Allow.

4. Add to the list the Sites
  A. "addons.mozilla.org" This is the site that installs Adblock
  B. "update.mozilla.org"

Jim

If you had followed the advice for older versions that "Allow web
sites to install software" was a security risk, and set the switch to
"no install" you would have no way to change it back without finding
the secret recipe to do it through "about:config" in the Location Bar.
