More evidence: It helps a lot if only one copy of FireFox is running.
$ pgrep firefox # find a couple of PID's
$ pkill firefox
At least I am back to where I can edit preferences.
The Edit -> Preferences -> Content panel offers me the following:
x Block Popup Windows
o Warn me when web sites try to install extensions or themes
x Load Images
x Enable Java
x Enable JavaScript
Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Downloads has the following:
When updates for Firefox are found
o Ask me what I want to do
x Automatically download and install
Items marked "x" are checked, "o" not checked. These seem to be the
ones related to installing software. I now have the feeling that
Mozilla/FireFox has outsmarted itself and partially changed the user
interface related to installing downloads, in such a way that you
can't get there from here.
