That is indeed the standard method. In my case it didn't work. I deduce that you had never disabled Software Installation in a previous version of FireFox. It turns out that the switch to do this has disappeared in FireFox 1.5. Since there is no more switch, there is no more easy GUI Edit -> Preferences way to change the switch. If you had followed the advice for older versions that "Allow web sites to install software" was a security risk, and set the switch to "no install" you would have no way to change it back without finding the secret recipe to do it through "about:config" in the Location Bar.
