OK, I posted a chart that may list your engine code at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/VW_engine_codes.gif . Engine codes are stamped into the top of the case somewhere near the "front" or propeller (pulley) end of the engine, near the oil filler. But if your case is aftermarket or remanufactured (and it may very well be), it will probably not be any of these either. Looking at this chart reminds me that Type 2s and 4s didn't come along until 1971. But don't let the earlier Type 2's fool you, as they were really Type 1 engines in a Type 2 chassis (the Bus)!
