Obviously I cannot by any stretch of the wildest imagination, speak for
Bates, but I honestly believe that if all he wanted was £5 Million then he
would have taken one of several opportunities yesterday to make that clear.

I've never been sure why Bates wanted our club but have always assumed that
he was bored to death in sunny Monaco and wanted to show some people in
football that he still had what it takes to run a successful club.
He's probably less bored now but still has a long way to go with the latter
aim (always assuming anybody thinks he had what it takes to run a successful
football club, given the parlous state of Chelsea when Abramovich turned
up).
If he was in it for the money then surely he wouldn't be putting himself
through all this angst, ringing all and sundry up and saying please vote for
me. He could just take Morris or Revie's money and piss off.
Also, given that he's a very wealthy man with, in the nature of things, not
that long to live, why would he be particularly worried about even more
money?
I genuinely believe we are his only hobby, that he gets off on all the
hassle involved with running a football club and that he really wants to
give it a right go to get us back in the Premiership.
I don't like him particularly, or his methods, but in some ways I prefer him
to those who've stood on the sidelines throughout all our problems and are
now trying to get us as cheaply as possible for who knows what motive
