Well, Jeff, if you flip the stock over and put it back onto the dogs
and mill, you are right about the oval-ish shape.  That's what I was
doing with the deck balusters.

And I just realized what you meant by using pocket holes on wooden
pilaster dogs.  That would certainly extend the life.  I think that's
what I'd do if I ever need some great than 6 inches.  I wish I could
do the same with the dogs I've made to make birdsmouth spars for
columns.  With a permanent mounting hub on one and a plastic piece for
the tailstock hub, they work fine, but I wonder how long it'll be
before I'll be making more.  They've already taken a few screws!
