(!) In /etc/passwd, the shell is /bin/bash for the ftp user
(2) /etc/ftp/users does NOT contain a entry for the ftp user
(3) /etc/ftp/hosts contains nothing

Any further clue?
Thanks

Try lba32 in lilo.conf instead of linear

No, you should not. All you need is to add "lba32" in the beginning of
your /etc/lilo.conf .

Which type of the remote mail server do you want to use?
If POP, then pine is not your choice, for it doesnt' support POP, at

Oops, sorry, didn't see the answers.
The cause of the problem is that you tried to mount /dev/hda2 which is
the second primary partition, while you have it as an extended partition
with /dev/hda5 with logical on it.

What is the safest way to remove Lilo from the MBR on a Win 2000/Linux
dual boot machine? Fdisk /mbr isn't going to work since Win 2000 isn't
DOS based. Can't get into the Linux partition to use any Linus removal
commands.

I don't have Applix installed at the moment as I've been messing around
with upgrading/downgrading, but I've looked at the manual and at the
"ApplixWare Office for Linux Bible" and neither of them mention any more
than the Format and AutoFormat options. The only thing I can suggest is to
AutoFormat a blank spreadsheet and save it to use as a template.

You should be able to use the DOS fdisk to change the partition type, but
if not you can use Ranish Partition Manager to change all the Linux
partitions to be the same as the type of the Windows partition (FAT16 or
FAT32), format them, then delete them starting from the top and working
down to the Windows partition. After you delete the last Linux partition
you'll be left with just the one Windows partition.

Are you looking for a Linux version of the Windows ConfigMaker GUI?
I don't think there is one yet, but Cisco no longer supports
configMaker, I think their new tool will be written in Java so it
may run on Linux.

I don't know of any open source. But, go to www.cisco.com and do a search
for Configmaker which is a Windows application. It supports several routers
natively but you can use the nearest router to your model as a base and
configure your router from that. It will deliver the configuration to your
router or you can do it manually.

LILO talks to the BIOS -- motherboard BIOS and whatever the SCSI
controller adds (installs) in to the motherboard BIOS. The NCR3350
seems a weird beast. All of the SCSI controllers *I've* used (Adaptec
154x and 2940s) poll from low-id to high id and insert a BIOS that maps
the hard drives to BIOS drive numbers in the same order (i.e. lowest
number is seen a sda or 0x80 (aka C:), next one up is sdb or 0x81 or
D:, and the next one up is sdc or 0x82, etc.). The controllers, the
BIOS, and Linux are all on the same page and everybody is happy. Oh
there is one little interesting titbit: the 2940's can be told to boot
from a different target (the default is 0 and the controller boots from
the first disk at id 0 or up). If you change the boot target to say 9
and the system has a disk at say 6, it will map drive 9 to 0x80 (C:)
and 6 to 0x81 (D:) -- this is *conceptually* in reverse order. I don't
know what the people who put you box together did, but some of the
Gateway boxes we have had disks set to ID 6 -- there is some theory
that disks with IDs closer to the controller's id (7) get faster
service (I am not sure this makes any real difference with a proper O/S
with an intelligent disk cache -- the boxes were delivered with Win9x
installed). The boards were configured with a boot target of 0
(default factory settings from Adaptec) -- this works because the
(modern (2940)) Adaptec controllers will keep scanning up the bus to
find the boot disk. I'm thinking that your machine's original disk might
have been some id other than 0 (like 6) and the SCSI controller was
'configured' by some moron with a boot target of 6 and you did
something moron (maybe an IDE expert) did not know about -- added a
second disk at a lower SCSI id (like 1). Now you are having a problem,
thanks to the moron mis-configuring the SCSI controller. I'm guessing
that your SCSI controller is just like the Adaptec controllers -- if
the moron left the factory default of a boot target of 0, the
controller would have correctly found device 6 and booted just find
from it, just like the (modern) Adaptec controllers do. And when you
put in a new drive and changed the ids in a sane fashion (sounds like
you did), the controller is now mis-behaving (from your POV) due to the
moron's mis-configuration. Check the controller's config -- specificly
the boot target id. I expect that there is a control-mumble you can
type as the controller is scanning the bus to talk to the controller's
little PROM and diddle its EEPROM settings. With Adaptec it is CTRL-A
(A for Adaptec?). Your controller should be displaying some kind of
message like 'Type CTRL-<mumble> to enter NCR's SCSI setup mumble' while
it is scanning the bus.

You can always fetch your mail to your local machine using fetchmail,
which supports very much different authentication systems.

Pine does support pop. I used it.

Sure it does. Specify the server as hostname:port/pop3

You can also tag on /user=username (where username is your login username)

If LILO can successfully boot Win 2000 with a boot record like:

other=/dev/hda1
        label=win2k
        table=/dev/hda

Then for boot purposes, Win 2000 *is* DOS based. I don't know the
*specifics* of Win 2000, but for WinNT 4.0 (Win 2000 is really WinNT
5.0), if you install WinNT 4.0 with a FAT16 C: drive, it can be booted
directly from LILO as if it were MS-DOS 6.x or Win9X (MS-DOS 7.x) --
that is installing WinNT 4.0 on a FAT16 C: installs WinNT's boot loader
as a MS-DOS .EXE file and there is an autoexec.bat file that runs this.

If you install WinNT with a NTFS C: drive, WinNT installs its boot
loader in the MBR and you CANNOT use lilo to boot WinNT -- you need to
use the WinNT boot loader to load Linux (yes, you can do this).

I'm guessing that Win 2000 is just like WinNT and you somehow installed
Win 2000 with a FAT16 (or FAT32) C: (did you install Win 2000 over a
Win9x system -- ie. upgraded Win9x to Win2K?). If that is the case, beg
or borrow a Win98 startup CD, boot from the CD and do a fdisk/mbr.

Thanks. Let me ponder your info...
Yes, I have a PCI buslogic card that polls up.
No cards I know of fit in the MCA slots. Too bad...

As far as I know, NCR3350 controller and 53c94 chip only know ID 0-6
and poll from 6 to 0. Original HD was on ID6. It's like the Mac---it
doesn't seem to care what IDs the HDs are.
I'll stick in the BIOS snooper disk and see if I can find anything...
