Is my mailclient screwing up, or were all those attachments empty except
syslog.conf?

You missed the interesting part, which should appear earlier than what you
pasted, and *should* say something along the lines of:

usb-storage: usbat_identify_device: Cylinder low is <...>
usb-storage: usbat_identify_device: Detected HP8200 CDRW
