VNC is like a Remotely Possible. But it is unnecessary to do what you are
trying to do....
X-Windows is by nature a networked windowing system. This means that it
can act like Terminal Services, allowing multiple sessions at the same time
across the network, as opposed to sharing the only one (that shows up on
the computer screen) like RP or pcAnywhere.
Study the /etc/X11/kdm/Xaccess file. You do NOT want a Chooser setup,
because that (IIRC) just acts as a "Central Directory" for available X
Servers to log into.
I (on my protected home network) uncommented the line with a single "*" on
it, meaning accept a GUI-login connection from anyone. There are various
ACL capabilities in this file you may want to consider. Then, restart your
X-Server on the server host. (CTRL-ALT-BKPSC).
On the machine you'd like to log in FROM, you want to be in Runlevel 3
(CLI). From the commandline, type something like:
X -query <IP OF TERMINAL SERVER>
and it should bring up a GUI login screen. There are many better accounts
of this config, but I hope this serves as a decent overview.

Can I get a GUI login from my upstairs PC running Mandrake 8.0 to my
downstairs PC running Caldera eD2.4? I'd like to be able to login to my
desktop and run my KDE apps if my wife happens to be downstairs on the
main PC (and vice versa). I would think that this should be fairly
straght-forward, linux being built for networking and all. Is this what
VNC is for? I thought VNC was intended to be used when connecting to a
linux server from some other O/S (Win, Mac, etc).
Care to hit me with a clue stick?
Regards,
Tim
