First of all, notice how no one treats her according to her title as
royalty and head of state, in France and now in UK, she got no red
carpet, no photo op and no curtsy. She was not received by her
official counterpart, which would be at least the head of state of AEU
member nations, i.e. French President or Queen of Britain. But
instead she met only with her effective counterpart, the foreign
ministers. It might be OK for superpowers like the USA and the late
USSR (or Union/AEU/HRA) to march out a secretary of state or foreign
minister to meet the head of state of third-rated nations, but for
everyone else, Britain and France included, matching rank is a minimal
sign of respect.

Ep.8 reinforced the fact that Marina has absolutely no power to affect
the government that's nominally hers. She's neither part of the
conflicting fractions nor a intermediate between them. Neither side
cared to warn her that something may start while she's away. More
importantly she's neither required to return to her country (in case
she can be helpful to one side or help negotiate a resolution) nor
prevented to return (in case her influence might be viewed negatively
by someone).

Ok... she's afraid there's a plot on her life, so at least she thinks
of herself as important enough to be killed.

Her only source of information and point of contact remains in the
person of Shirin. But obviously Shirin has many other channels within
Azadistan. There is no question that Shirin is far more influential,
despite her gender and lack of title, than Marina. The concept of
royal blood in Marina is just a bad joke. She was not born into
royalty but given the title Queen by the government (not sure which
fraction or it was a bipartisan compromise, any idea?). There might
be any number of reasons they chose Marina over Shirin to be Queen.
But I think it's no coincidental that Marina is idealistic,
unambitious, politically naive and poorly connected, even might be
suffering from ADD. (which other head of state would interrupt her
business in the midst of a national political disaster just because
she saw a kinsman on the street).

She was made a Queen precisely because she's seen to be irrelevant and
inconsequential. And if there's some hope of an interesting story
left in G00, it would be how a meek voice would somehow combine with
the brawn of the Gundam to save the day.

It's the story of Queen Maria/Usso, Princess Relena/Heero and Queen
Diana/Loran once again.
