Just a couple of comments on this electrical theme.

In Alberta, I am paying approx .06/KwHr. I signed a 3 yr contract with the
supplier so that price is guaranteed.

Red Deer, AB, where I live in the winter there are 6 or 8 homes that are
totally independant from the power grid, both electrical and gas. They have a
slew of solar panels on the roof and use geothermic to heat and cool. Any
excess power they generate that they can't store they "sell" to the power grid.
(In truth, they get a credit which can be used for those days that they can't
generate enough power via the panels)

The downside of these homes is they cost approx 200K more than a home that is
not energy independant. I think it will take a long time to pay off that 200K.
My gut feeling is the owners are, enviromentally conscienous people, who also
have a lot of excess money and they enjoy being able to brag to their friends
that they are energy independant.

In Ontario, where I spend my summers working on my trawler (mandatory boat tie
in), if I were to build a wind generator, Ontario Hydro will buy the power from
me at .35/KwHr and then resell at .07/KwHr. Yes, that is at a loss, but that is
what it costs to generate power using the current wind technology. This way,
Ontario Hydro can advertize that they are investing in a reusable energy
generating system.

Denmark, which has been involved in wind energy longer than any other country
has thousands of them, yet they have yet to close even one coal fired power
generating plant.

Finally, I am not running down any alternate energy source, but I want to make
the point that at our current technologic level most of the alternive methods
are not efficient enough to be cost effective.
