grepmail: http://grepmail.sourceforge.net/ deal with compressed mail folders and will recurse as well so at worst you can do: grepmail whatever ~mail/* and then grepm: http://www.barsnick.net/sw/grepm.html which opens the results in mutt (although there are equivalents for other MUAs...) and it's perl. (although not really looked at the code[0] so might be perl with XS bits for speed...) s [0] I'm just too lazy to do that unless it doesn't work
